The title Everything Is Music comes from a poem by the 13th century Sufi Persian-language poet Mawlānā Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, more commonly known simply as Rumi. “We have fallen to a place where everything is music!” reads the most famous line of the poem, in English. Guest artists will include long-time Atash collaborators, many for the first time working together, including world guitarist Fareed Haque (Paquito D’Rivera, Sting, Garaj Mahal, MathGames), Uzbek doira (frame drum) master Abbos Kosimov (Zakir Hussain, Stevie Wonder, Kronos Quartet), and the lovely Spanish flamenco dancer Pilar Andújar (Carmen, directed by Franco Zeffirelli; Riverdance). We are also proud to introduce, for the first time with Atash, Amsterdam-based Hindustani-jazz vocalist Sandhya Sanjana, whose singing is featured on Alice Coltrane’s album Glorious Chants and the BBC television series, Rhythms of the World. Also featured will be Austin-based guest percussionists Gourisankar (tabla), Michael Longoria (Brazilian percussion), and Abou Sylla’s west African drum and dance troupe Bramaya.
Atash has spread its message of love and peace on the east and west coasts, in Taiwan, China, Spain and México, gaining legions of fans and sharing stages with such notable acts as Youssou N’Dour, Maceo Parker, Angelique Kidjo, Ojos de Brujo, The Counting Crows, Diego El Cigala, Omar Souleyman, Fatoumata Diawara, Red Baraat, Dengue Fever, and fellow Austinites The Octopus Project. They are truly the Austin ambassadors of world music, and have won the Austin Music Award for Best World Music Band for the last six years in a row.
